New RF Transmission/Reception Research: "LAMM" by Tim M0TFR

2nd Woodley Scout Group, Vauxhall Park, Vauxhall Dr, Woodley, Reading RG5 4EA, UKWe welcome Dr. Tim Brown Senior Lecturer in RF Antennas and Propagation from the University of Surrey for an in person talk looking at the cutting edge of RF research.
We're all used to dealing with polarisation. Combined with multiple transmitting and receiving antennas (MIMO), use of multiple polarisations can be used to squeeze the most out of an RF channel.
Now there's something new on the block: "LAMM" or "Linear Orbital Angular Momentum" to add to the mix.
"Like many other radio technologies used today in the modern world, the amateur radio community began the concept of using what is known as Orbital Angular Momentum to multiplex and transmit two or more signals simultaneously at the same frequency. With the idea coming from optical communications where it is very useful, it has drawbacks that limit its capability when used in radio such as short range. Therefore this led to the idea of unravelling the concept into what is known as Linear Angular Momentum Multiplexing (LAMM), something good for radio but not so good for optics. This has the potential to enable gigabit connectivity in a reliable, low cost and low energy way but it’s by using equipment commonly used in amateur radio that it becomes possible to demonstrate the concept with the hope of leading to a commercial solution."
