Jackson’s Corner December 2013
After a long hot Summer, the September meeting of RADARC, Reading And District ARC kicked off its Autumn series of talks with one that included vacuum tubes but not the ones radio amateurs are used to.
The tubes were indeed vacuum but were used to transfer cash from the counter to their accounts department in the locally famous Reading department store “Jackson’s of Jackson’s Corner”.
Many club members have grown up in Reading where Jackson’s was one of the country’s first department stores. They had been to Jackson’s as children with their families. So, for a change the club talk was given by local historian Thomas Macey who worked there for many years.
It was a fascinating insight into how the Jackson’s business started and grew in Victorian times till it’s eventual closure in 2013. Our thanks to Thomas Macey for such an engaging talk.
The talk was a pleasant change from amateur radio but we will be back on topic at our next meeting!
